Complementary Exercise
In addition to these formalised classes, Tasmanian Kodokan Judo Clubs encourage daily activities that help all its members to achieve better Judo performances and increased levels of fitness. This include running, weight training, Tandoku Renshu (individual exercises), Sotai Renshu (joint or paired exercises), Tai Sabaki (body turning) kata and solo Uchi Komi (winding in). These and other exercises are to be found in the Kodokan Judo Handbook by Jigoro Kano (Kodansha International, ISBN 4-7700-1799-5).
These complementary activities are to be undertaken by each judoka as their goals or competition participation demands. There is no coercion involved in ensuring that these exercises are done, as sooner or later, each judoka comes to the realisation that progress in judo comes only through hard study and training, and 4–6 hours a week is not nearly enough to progress with any sense of consistency or advancement.
To quote Sensei Zavetchanos, Hachidan:
"It is expected of you to practice the art of judo assidiously so that you may progress
and be an inspiration and example for other judoka to follow"
It is with this in mind that the complementary exercises are to be undertaken.
