Principles
Tasmanian Kodokan Judo Association Inc is an affiliate member of the Australian Kodokan Judo Association (AKJA). As such, we adhere to the Principles of the founder of Judo, Professor Jigoro Kano. We also recognise the seat of Judo as being based in the Kodokan Japan, and consider ourselves to be under its auspices through the head of the AKJA, Sensei Ivan Zavetchanos 8th Dan.
In essence, we believe in the creative genius of Professor Kano, and further believe that his 'system' of Judo, when correctly taught and learned, is more than applicable to our 'modern' times. We recognise that new techniques exist, yet we have found that all techniques must pass the rigour of Professor Kano's teaching method in order to be classified as judo techniques.
We accept that judo is a growing and evolving entity, but that we must resist the urge to distance ourselves from the founding dynamic principles of Judo. These principles are a scientific fact, not just an attempt to 'hang on' to the past for the past's sake.
Likewise, the training at Tasmanian Kodokan Judo Association Inc incorporates Kata training as part of its syllabus in order to better understand these dynamic principles. Advanced judoka are expected to spend extra time each week to improve their level of proficiency in Kata.
